Is Permanent Makeup Eyeliner Actually Permanent?

One of the most fun aspects of wearing makeup is experimenting with different looks. Fashions change with the seasons as do makeup trends. Whether you’re someone who’s a cosmetic chameleon or you prefer a more classic look, you can still be a great candidate for permanent makeup eyeliner. If you’ve been considering opting for a permanent makeup eyeliner look, you’ll no doubt wish to know if the final result will actually last forever. Let’s take a look.

Technically speaking, all permanent cosmetic makeup procedures are classed as just that – permanent. This is because micropigment is placed into the reticular area of the skin’s dermal layer. It subsequently cannot be washed away. But we refer to them as semi-permanent because they will fade over long periods of time if not taken care of and touched up.

Initially, your permanent eyeliner will look rather dark. It will remain that way for the first few days after your procedure. As your skin begins to heal, you’ll see your eyeliner soften and lighten. Although your eyeliner is considered to be permanent, they are subject to fading, just like any regular tattoo or pigment in general. Fading is to be expected, therefore. So, your permanent eyeliner will need maintenance known as colour refreshing from time to time.

There are various factors that can cause your permanent eyeliner to fade more rapidly than usual. These include:

  • Sun exposure
  • Body chemistry
  • Exfoliation
  • Exposure to chlorinated or salt water
  • Skin peels
  • Some facials
  • Anti-aging products
  • Cellular turnover
  • Lighter colours fade more rapidly than darker ones
  • Some medications may speed up the rate your permanent eyeliner fades at. If you suspect this is happening to you, have a chat with your doctor

It’s good practice to get into the habit of wearing an SPF cream over your permanent makeup eyeliner so you can maintain it’s longevity and beauty.
